Established in 1981 and located in Williamsburg, MI, GTP has always been focused on delivering high-quality components and assemblies. The Company began with only a few presses and a solid foundation of tool design and build. Over the course of the next 35-years, GTP’s quality and consistency afforded the Company with opportunities to expand the relationships with its customers and in the process, broaden skill sets in material knowledge, part design, automation, error proofing, manufacturability and tooling management.
Today, GTP is known for its extensive use of high-performance engineered resins, which are particularly difficult to mold but are required for high heat and stress applications. These resins are in use across a broad range of industries as manufacturers seek to reduce weight, decrease cost and enhance recyclability – without sacrificing component performance. Today, GTP serves the automotive market with under-the-hood components for engine and transmission applications, the material handling market for conveyor system components, and the industrial sector for structural and functional applications.
“Our customers look to Grand Traverse Plastics as a solution provider to some of their toughest design and manufacturing challenges. They rely on our world-class quality, high-touch customer support and value that we put on long-term relationships. It is our job to continually prove to our customers the GTP difference and the extraordinary value we provide” – Bob White, President
Values & Operating Philosophy
Throughout GTP’s history, we have operated under some basic principles:
- Do what you say you are going to do
- Take care of your teammates
- We all represent GTP
- Listen, learn and apply
These principles are outlined in our “Day One” booklet that is presented to new employees on their first day of work. Simply put, if we are focused on listening to our customers and our colleagues and we deliver on what we promise, then we together will be successful as will our customers.
Today, GTP has over 100 employees and a deep commitment to training programs which enhance manufacturing skills, managerial talent, leadership and above all, civility and integrity. We are a family-oriented company with events and activities throughout the year to show appreciation for the quality and success of our work-force. Finally, our senior management team has an average tenure of 25+ years with GTP, a reflection of our commitment to employees.
GTP operates three manufacturing facilities on one campus located in Williamsburg, MI which is approximately 15 minutes outside of Traverse City and a sales and engineering office in Sterling Heights and Troy, MI.
- Plant #1 specializes in smaller tonnage critical use functional plastics with state-of-the art automation.
- Plant #2 contains higher tonnage molding machines for large under-the-hood engine and transmission programs with similar robotics and automation.
- Plant #3 contains our mold building and features in-house automation development. In 2021, Plant #3 will provide high-precision lights out manufacturing.
Sustainability and Community
Every day we see the beautiful waters of Grand Traverse bay and scenery of Northern Michigan, and we are acutely reminded how important sustainability, reuse and recyclability are to our communities and planet. As such, we have a deep commitment to utilizing our extensive knowledge of plastics and resin properties to recommend materials to our customers that strike a balance between performance and sustainability.
Since its inception, GTP has been a supporter of the Greater Traverse Bay and its surrounding area, providing resources to community groups and outreach organizations throughout the year.
